Ksenia Yudaeva meets with NGO representatives in Washington

Chief of the Presidential Experts' Directorate and the Russian G20 Sherpa Ksenia Yudaeva had a meeting with the representatives of the US civil society organizations during her visit to Washington D.C.

The meeting was attended by the representatives of over 30 NGOs working in the fields of food security, protection of labour rights, fighting corruption, providing support for small business, and assistance for the developing countries.

The US NGOs representatives expressed support for Russia's stance on cooperation with civil society during the its G20 Presidency tenure and promoting cooperation between the Civil 20 and the G20 Working Groups and Sherpas, which allow obtaining recommendations from a broad range of external stakeholders and incorporating them into the final documents of the St.Petersburg Summit.

The consultations revealed a high level of the US civil society's interest in the G20 efforts in all of the priority spheres outlined by Russia for 2013.

Ksenia Yudaeva reported to the NGOs representatives on the key focus areas of Russia's G20 Presidency, with particular emphasis on assistance for development, which is an area where civil society has an increasingly influential role to play. She also commented on what was expected by Russia from the St.Petersburg Summit.

The NGO representatives presented their proposals and recommendations on financial regulation, food prices volatility, feeding the world, improving employment, combating corruption, ensuring financial inclusion and drafting an Action Plan for the post-2015 millennium development goals. Civil society recommendations will be reviewed by the Civil 20 Working Groups and then proposed for consideration of the G20 Working Groups.

Participants also discussed the implementation of the G20 proposals on the international financial architecture, including the IMF reform started in 2010 and revising the IMF quota formula. They also granted support for Russia's initiative on better management of sovereign debt.

Ksenia Yudaeva noted that the Russian Presidency aimed to demonstrate the benefits of cooperation between civil society and experts involved in the G20 Summit preparation process, the G20 Working Groups, and Sherpas. She added that subsequent G20 presidencies should apply experience gained by Russia to carry on cooperation with civil society and organize discussions of the G20 Agenda with NGOs. Civil society could help the G20 countries reach a consensus, which is necessary for assuming commitments in the priority spheres on their agenda.

The Civil 20 Summit will be held within the framework of Russia's G20 Presidency in Moscow, on June 13-14.
